RSPCA Cadets Visit Highland Centre

On the 16th February 24 cadets under training to become RSPCA Officers visited the Brownbread Highland Pony Centre in Ashburnham.  The cadets are on a training course based at the RSPCA headquarters near Horsham however two weeks are spent at Plumpton College for equine studies.  As part of these studies their tutor, Brenda Smith arranged the visit to the Highland Pony Centre that has been established for over 40 years.

Stud owner, Dinty Steains lead a conducted tour of the stud where there are currently three stallions with their mares and they were able to see one foal that was born a week ago.  Dinty is a National Pony Society judge and has also been asked to judge several times abroad. She explained that the Highlands that she breeds here in Sussex have decended mainly from the Hebridean Island of Rhum   She said, "Whereas Scottish mainland Highlands tend to be grey/white these ponies mostly have harder colours of chocolate, black or yellow dun."  She added that a lot of her work involved training some of the Highlands for disabled riders for which they are ideally suited.

The cadets also gained an insight into the horse rescue charity work which is based on the same site and has free use of its facilities.
